The best thing to do is to get a stuff sack for your sleeping bag (it should have come with one). Just stuff the sleeping bag into the stuff sack. Don’t bother trying to roll it up and tying it or anything. First of all, it’s time consuming (and frustrating) and second if you keep rolling it, you will put permanent creases into the filler of the bag, which can reduce its insulating ability.

The stuff sac (with the sleeping bag in it) is best put right into your pack. Hopefully there’s room. Most newer quality sleeping bags will pack pretty small so you shouldn’t have a problem. If you can’t get it into you pack, then you’ll have to strap it to the outside. Most packs have a ‘top-bag’ that is attached to the main bag by adjustable straps in the front and back. Most people put their sleeping bags under the top-bag and tighten the straps to secure the sleeping bag. Other than that, you could use some lengths of rope to secure your sleeping bag to either the top or bottom of your pack.

But remember: you don’t want anything swinging back and forth on your pack. That throws your weight around and you have to spend energy keeping your balance – which is a waste of energy.

Of course you could always go back to where you bought your pack and they’ll give you lots of great tips on how to pack for an overnight hiking trip.
